Fieldschool’s Guerrilla Arts x Athletics Project

What are Fieldschool Projects?

Each day at Fieldschool, we focus on 1–2 project-based units called "Fieldschool Projects". Each semester we select 4–6 diverse Projects and rotate through them on a weekly basis, providing a consistent backdrop for endless variety and adventure.

Your learner can sign up for a drop-in pass and only attend on days that have their favourite Projects (for instance, joining each Tuesday for Parkour Academy). Or, they can jump in for 2–4 days per week and experience our full, diverse range of Projects. Click here to view 'em all!

Wait.. what is Fieldschool? Ah, nice to meet you! Let us point you in the right direction...

Water is just a gateway to being the next Banksy, Swiftwater Rescue Technician, or even a Greninja (if you know, you know).

Our weekly Guerrilla Arts x Athletics Club balances educational pool adventures (10x more accessible and exciting than swim lessons) with hands-on, outdoor art that inspires youth to think of the cultural implications of street and guerrilla-style art.

What are the Clubs core goals?

  • To help learners progress with their water literacy by applying interesting topics that go beyond just basic swim strokes, like pool acrobatics and water rescue.
  • To provide meaningful, tactile visual arts opportunities that introduce learners to a wide variety of media and artistic theories in a fun, punk rock way.
  • To provide a holistic, regulating mid-week space that equally promotes physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Why should youth sign up?

  • Honestly… so many kids just need a second chance at trying sports and arts. We believe every person can love these activities but have been introduced to them wrong place, wrong time, and wrong way in the past. This is coming from Headmaster Barnsy himself, who got kicked out of swimming, soccer, and piano as a kid.
  • It’s the perfect place to build physical literacy and confidence while also upping your social skills through the back-and-forth nature of sports and collaborative element of art.
  • We teach how to get started on a creative idea as a group, or how to generate and complete your own personal project.
  • Find a space to play your playlist, relax, and get creative.
  • Becoming comfortable around land and water sports translates into future success in outdoor expeditions and other experiential pursuits with VOS and Fireside Adventures. First stop getting comfortable with swimming and drawing, next stop training with astronauts in Japan and learning Indigenous art in the Amazon!

Who should sign up? Ages 11–15 (upper aged) and 6–10 (lower aged) who:

  • Have a lot of energy
  • Don’t have a lot of energy
  • Like to live on the wild side and are Rebels Against the Boring

Who leads the Guerrilla Arts x Athletics Club?

Liam “Barnsy” Barnes and Madi Seneviratne! These two have led canoe expeditions in BC and Yukon together as well as many Guerrilla-style days of Fieldschool all across Metro Vancouver. Their trips are the coolest trips, it’s true!

Liam Barnes portrait

Barnsy: “I started at Fireside as a junior instructor. Since then I’ve helped (and sometimes hindered) the creation of Fireside’s World Bound and Vancouver Outdoor School’s Fieldschool from the ground up. I also created our Parkour & Film-making curriculum. We need to turn education into an electric guitar – we need something fast, furious, out-of-the-box and real to help us stand against modern challenges.

Madi: Five years ago, I signed up for an overnight camp with Fireside Adventures / VOS because it included a first aid course. That three week experience changed my life. Now, working with kids, being outdoors, and learning about the environment are my passions. I aim to pass on the experiences I’ve had and inspire youth to expand their comfort zones. If I’ve learned one thing with Fireside and VOS it’s that you never know where your next adventure might lead!
